    Daar is heelwat meningsverkil oor die herkoms van Ignace Maré, die stamvader van die familie Maré in Suid-Afrika. Graham Botha het hom as 'n 'Franse vlugteling' beskou. Sy eerste opgaafrol dateer egter uit die jare 1704-1705. Dit beteken dat hy in dié jare aan die Kaap gekom het. Hy was toe 'n wewenaar met twee dogters, maar die name van sy vrou en een van die dogters ontbreek.
