    Nadat hy saam met sy ouers in c. 1838
    oor die Vaalrivier getrek het, word die eerste Transvaalse dorp, Potcheftroom, gestig en
    in 1842 word die plaas "Waterkloof", agter die Magaliesberg, dist Rustenburg aan hom
    toegeken. Teen 1845 vertrek hy saam met die Potgieter-trek na Ohrigstad, maar na
    afsterwe van sy eggenote trek hy terug na Magaliesberg en wy sy aandag aan boerdery
    en jag. Gedurende c. 1851 is hy veldkornet van sy wyk en daarmee saam militêre
    aanvoerder ten tye van kommando’s teen die inboorlinge en ook administratiewe sowel
    as regsprekende beampte in kleiner sake. In 1854 is hy reeds kommandant van
    Rustenburg en maak hy die veldtog teen Makopane mee. Hy neem ook aktief deel aan
    verskeie veldtogte teen Makopane asook Mosjesjwe en slaag ook daarin om ‘n
    vredesooreenkoms met die Basothohoof op 18.6.1858 te sluit. Word gekies as
    kommandant-generaal in April 1863 en kon hy met meer gesag optree, soms as
    diplomaat in onderhandelinge, soms as militêre aanvoerder aan die hoof van ‘n
    kommando. Vanaf 1873 gee hy meer aandag aan sy boerdery te "Boekenhoutfontein",
    dist Rustenburg, nadat die volksraad hom as kommandant-generaal sy ontslag verleen
    het. Beywer hom vir die behoud van onafhanklikheid van Transvaal en begin hy in
    toenemende mate die leiding neem waarna hy op 8.3.1877 as vise-president met die
    mag om die volksraad byeen te roep aangewys word. Hy lei die verset t.o.v. annekasie
    van die republiek en na vele onderhandelinge in Londen, Engeland knoop hy op
    tuisfront die stryd aan teen die Kaapse goerwerneur deur die organisering van ‘n
    versetbeweging wat by ‘n volksbyeenkoms te Wonderfontein in Des. 1879 besluit dat
    die regering so gou moontlik herstel moet word. Die volksraad word deur die
    volkskomitee by Paardekraal byeen geroep in Des. 1880 en word die regering van die
    republiek daartoe gedwing om die wapen op te neem. Hy voer ‘n stryd om deur
    onderhandeling steeds ‘n oplossing te kry wat aanleiding gee tot die
    wapenstilstandonderhandelinge van Maart 1881 by Laingsnek. Na afloop van die Eerste
    Vryheidsoorlog met die presidentsverkiesing, word hy op 9.5.1883 as staatspresident
    van die ZAR ingesweer waarna hy sy beleid aankondig wat gegrond is op Chritelike
    beginsels. Gedurende sy ampstyd voer hy ‘n voortdurende stryd op ekonomiese sowel
    as politieke vlak en beywer hom altyd vir die voortbestaan v.d. republiek, waarna hy
    teen einde Sept 1899 besluit dat dit vir die republiek militêr beter sou wees om die
    insiatief te neem en aanvallend op te tree en op 11.9.1899 breek die Anglo-Boereoorlog
    uit. Speel ‘n groot rol in hierdie oorlog en gryp ook soms in en maan bevelhebbers en
    burgers om te volhard. Spreek die volksraad vir die laaste keer toe op 7.5.1900 en moet
    hy Pretoria verlaat om die naderende Britse magte te ontduik.. Hy besluit om na Europa
    te gaan, via Lorenco Marques om weer eens die saak van die strydende Boere te
    bevorder, maar hy ontvang geen ondersteuning in Europa. Verhuis tydelik in c. 1902-3
    na die Franse Riviera, keer Okt. 1903 terug na Nederland en in ballingskap vestig hy te
    Clarens, Switserland
